How To Make A Vanity Top In A Bathroom
A vanity top is used to held a wash hand basin and also provide a counter. This is used in bathrooms where the wash hand basin is not wall mounted or held by a pedestal. The counter top can be made from various materials like timber, granite, terrazzo, medium density fibre board or concrete. The cost of the material will determine the choice to use. Timber is easy to use but has limitation due to the absorption of water, therefore its life span may not be long. The other materials can withstand water.
The vanity top has a slot to fit the basin. This is cut to have the bowl recessed below. Some wash basins may be fixed above the top and only holes for plumbing cut below it. Therefore before purchasing the basin it is important to know how vanity top marries with it. When constructing the bathroom, the designer should have the basins recessed into a wall. This will allow only the front part to be open and thus have a storage space below it. This can have doors to close. They can be made of medium density fibre board or any other suitable material.
The wash hand basin area is marked out where the plumbing is located. A frame work of medium density fibre board is formed to carry the vanity top. This is done for a single or double wash hand basin. The size is about two feet long by one and a half feet wide for a single vanity. The granite top is place on the frame work and cut to fit with an overhang of two inches. Once it is measured, then a card board template for the basin bowl is used to mark the position of the basin. A hole is then Cut Out on the granite.
After cutting out the basin position on the granite vanity, an appropriate adhesive is used to fix onto the frame work. This granite is glued to the frame work and after drying for a day the basin is then laid in and fixed. The plumbing is then connected and tested. The compartment below the vanity is then covered with two doors. This also allows for servicing of the bottle traps in case of blockage or repairs. The basin is fixed with silicon onto the granite to prevent water seepage. The vanity top is then cleaned thoroughly and ready for use after one day.
