Old phonographs

old phonographs literally burst on the scene of history in December 1877, an affiliate of Thomas Edison's attempt to save the contents of the telegraph transmissions for later use. The original concept was to enhance the dots and dashes of Morse code on paper or aluminum foil to a record of characters transmitted would be created and can be relayed accurately and quickly.

Already aware that the sound can vary a diaphragm thin, Edison had a flash of inspiration. He decided to put a pencil, very similar to the concept of the telegraph, on the diaphragm, and thus able to record the effects of those sounds in a soft material such as aluminum foil. He quickly developed a rough idea of the design of a phonograph instrument, and in less than two days, his assistant, John Kreusi, has drafted a working prototype.

Thomas Edison said the words of the nursery rhyme "Mary had a little lamb "into the mouthpiece of the meeting of his phonograph sound again. When the pen is passed back over the grooves in the cylinder, then their words are repeated Audible!

Imagine the astonishment of the staff of the magazine Scientific American, when Thomas Edison accidentally entered their offices in New York on December 22 1877. He bent the device manually (seen on this page) on the table, and began to inquire about his health, praised the new invention, and sends a good night fans.

Despite the publication of a list of practical uses for his new invention, was that the difficulty of use and the fragility of recordings (carried out after only a few moves), contributed to a decline of interest in the phonograph to the public. Edison again attention to the invention of the incandescent bulb.

However, others were commissioned to improve the invention of Edison. Alexander Graham Bell, his cousin, Chichester Bell and Charles Tainter, who has won fame for the introduction of the telephone, began working in the technology of the phonograph somehow related. Both reproduce the sound through the use of a diaphragm.

The bells soon introduced the gramophone, in place of the hill "and dale "bleeding from the needle with a more durable reproduction technology: floating needle incision. It also replaces the media foil with wax longer.

Edison rejected overtures by the Bells to collaborate and improve the phonograph, choosing instead incorporate many of their ideas in the New Phonograph "in 1887 and operating under the name of the company Edison Phonograph Company. The "Perfected Phonograph "Soon followed, reflecting Edison's experiments with combinations of new media.

In 1890, Edison Phonograph Toy Manufacturing Co. for a short time produced a line of talking dolls, which are Very Rare and valuable today. The Spring Motor Phonograph appeared in 1896.

standard cylinders, the mass production of the engraved cylinders (Gold Moulded), longer recording time, and cost reduction as seen in the model of "gem" 1899, helped further the public demand for recorded sound. Edison Concert Phonograph, which did not sell well, is a rare find these days, and was more expensive, but produced stronger sound. Production ceased in 1912.

Also in 1912, competitors Victor (more later RCA Victor) and Columbia had left cylinder technology for the discs. Edison Blue Amberol Record, a cylinder that is touted as unbreakable, was his last attempt to avoid competition from disk.

For more than a century, Edison was thought to have produced the first sound in recorded history. However, 2008, the first sounds of collaboration have been able to contribute to the work of French scientist Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, and his phonautograms, produced in 1859 and 1860 and turn their etchings on paper first audible sound. Although never intended to be audible, Martinville had experimented with wave patterns and tone words as shown in the paper. His 1860 song "Au Clair de la Lune" – now audible, is believed to be one of the earliest records of humanity audible.
