agility set homemade or manufactured?
I'm training my miniature Schnuazer, Nellie Boo, to agility. I'm thinking of doing my own equiptment agility. Could be easier (and make it better train) to have a set type strore purchased? I've seen games on eBay for initiation pretty cheap, and I'm thinking of buying one …. What do you think is best? Or does it really matter?
The answer to your "Home Made or manufactured" question is: yes. I have equipment I purchased. I have the team that I did. If you are starting out, the most important issues would be two jumps, weave poles 6 and advice. Everything else can come later. Well, it's very easy to make PVC jumps. It is very easy to do weave poles and a Board PVC is only one piece of wood in contact with areas painted in. Now, as to the things we're seeing, let me tell you frankly that is not some absolute crap out there in terms of equipment you can buy. – Do not buy a child play tunnel. You want your dog to run in a tunnel and not slow down, to be able to run on the sides. She can not do that with a cheaper tunnel. So buy a quality tunnel. Seriously – you can skimp on a lot of things but buying a plastic toy tunnel is a waste of money. – Do not waste money on a pause box. Trains to almost nothing. But pause a table you can do yourself. And you get an entirely different behavior when you ask a dog that has been running to jump on a table and then make a down-stay for 5 seconds. A box just do not break capture. – Most cheapo tires are a waste of time. I have one in a set that I bought. My dog did not recognize the real tire that had train in class because it looked so different from what we had at home. Over time I have used for the PVC frame, Bunji cord to hold it, but I black drain pipe from Home Depot to do so. – Fabrics: if you buy them, making good quality. Stick in the ground are not great because you can not use 'em on the inside in bad weather. Me like PVC b / c you can do to train them to weave channel speed. – Staggering: you can easily do that with wood, glue, paint and PVC (for the base). If you get serious about making Your Own equipment, check out Jim Hutchins book "Do it yourself agility equipment." I have it, it's great and used it to make an A-frame. If you want to buy cheap equipment agility, agility look affordable (I think it is www.affordableagility.com). They have a kit called "Agility in a bag "that includes two jumps, textiles, tires, box break and a corridor that everyone can carry over your shoulder.
