The Sweet Seduction of Perfume
Only a few centuries ago, all beautiful perfumes were made from natural ingredients. Using the traditional French method of Perfumery, it was made by combining organic flowers and plant extracts with 100% natural wine alcohol, distilled from organic grapes.
With the chemical industry advancement post World War II , Chemicals became a key ingredient of perfumes and we saw the emergence of “fragrance” or synthetic perfume. The price of synthetic flower and plant extracts meant these new perfumes were able to be produced extremely cheaply and with a new level of consistency that could only be achieved using chemicals. This was great for commercial interests – but not great for the true perfume lover! If you use perfume you are now being exposed to cheap, harmful synthetic ‘fragrances’ and petroleum based alcohol carriers instead of wine alcohol
There are several reasons why a petroleum based chemicals are dangerous. These chemicals are not only carcinogenic (cancer causing) but they are also hormone disrupters that can cause infertility as well as a wide array of other health problems.
Chemical ingredients in modern perfumes and fragrances have been known to cause asthma attacks, headaches, allergic skin reactions and nausea. Synthetic musk fragrance has even been found in human fat and breast milk. What is more frightening is that due to the need for protection of trade secrets, companies rarely give the full listing of ingredients regardless of their effects on health.

What is the best aromatherapy essential oil used for handmade soap?
I was thinking of making a small batch. Wondering soapers what others have liked the way of aromatherapy essential oils (as opposed to fragrance perfume) of oil. I know many of them are suitable for handmade soap by the termperature or expense. I was thinking orange, patchouli and cedar. Any suggestions? Thank you all – well Tink
