Oil Painting on board ?
What sort of board do you need to buy to paint on a flat smooth surface.
I’ve only ever used canvas.
I’m looking at doing a few miniatures and i need a VERY smooth surface.
What type of board do I need to buy, appropriate to paint on with oils?
Note: The miniatures will be portraits.
Masonite works really well for paintings. It is very smooth and just as archival as canvas. You can get it at any hardware store, though they generally sell it in 4′ x 8′ sheets, which will have to be cut down to size. Lows and Home Depot will cut board for you. In order to paint with oils, you need to coat the board in gesso or an acrylic binder. I find white acrylic paint to work well when I want a smooth surface. You can also sand down the gesso to get a smoother surface.
