Will you translate this from French to English for me?
‘Monsieur du Lantenay y Pierre’
Does it mean he’s from the town of Lantenay, in France? Or is that his last name? I know his name is Pierre, but what exactly does the ‘y’ mean?
And if it is his last name, would it be ‘du Lantenay’, or just ‘Lantenay’?
This is written on the back of a Miniature Portrait I have, ca. 1790.
I really need to know the answer to this. He’s very special to me.
He also went by the name Peter.
This is the actual portrait. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see what’s on the back. The dealer read it as ‘Tantenay’, but I’m certain it’s ‘Lantenay’.

The y has no meaning here. It’s probably part of his name. I’m guessing his middle name was for example Yves, which he wrote as Y.
And for the last name, it can be “du Lantenay”. Just like in English, someone can have the name “Van Dyke”, while someone else has the name “Dyke”.
Lantenay might be a town, but it is not referring to the town when it stands directly after “monsieur”.
