60′s style music products?
In the mid to late 60′s just as FM was coming in popularity and just before stereo there was Hi Fi but when FM was starting there was a new product that sat on the back dash of your car over two speakers that looked like miniature pipes for a pipe organ. They were kind of popular in Los Angelse and they enhanced the sound of the car radio. They lasted a couple of years untill the speaker manufacturers started swamping the market with good quality stereo radios and speakers. Does anyone know what those pipe things were called? I was wondering because 60′s on 6 on XM was doing a series of programs where they played different radio stations from around the country on different days and I heard most of their program of BOSS radio 93 KHJ in Los Angeles and that got me to thinking about old stuff like that. Is anyone familiar with BOSS KHJ radio 93 with Robert W. Morgan and Charlie Tuna or KFWB radio 98 with Bill Ballance and the fem forum or KRLA 1110. Those were the days wern’t they?
This is amazing! I am listening to an old aircheck (recording) of Robert W. as I saw your question. It’s from 1972 and they just did a news bulletin about Nixon promising to stop the bombing and Henry going back to Paris. I had been back from Vietnam (where i was a DJ – honest) for 2 years when this tape was made. I also got some Johnny Williams from his KHJ days and Pat Sajak (who was also on AFVN).
Well, enough reminiscing. I can’t put a name to the device you are asking about, but there were all sorts of things on the market back then as AM stations, which were getting clobbered by FM, tried desperately to keep and regain their audiences. They would promise “Stereo-Like Sound.”
Alas, we all know how that story turned out. There are a few websites that offer airchecks of the old stations including KHJ. Go to Google or yahoo Search and start looking around.
