Miniature Green
How do you take care of miniature mums?

I just got a potted miniature mum plant for Valentines day. I definitely don’t have a green thumb (I once killed a jade plant), but I’m determined to keep this one alive. Any advice is useful. Thank you!

Water when the soil starts to feel dry. Give it a sunny window. Repot it once a year. I don’t know how well they do long-term inside.

You could try planting it directly in the ground in the spring. Mums are perennials – however your success will depend on the sepcies you have (some are more winter-tolerant than others) and your climate. Around here – mums go dormant in winter. You cut them back to the ground after they die in the fall – and then they put up all new growth in the spring, and flower in late summer/fall.

However – mums that are grown for commercial selling – are developed for interesting colors and flower forms – and they generally don’t pay attention to, or care about cold-hardiness. Many mum-buyers simply treat them as annuals and buy new ones every year.
