Come to Appenzellerland – Switzerlands Best Kept Secret in Miniature!
Appenzell is a small territory in the north east of Switzerland that is divided in two half cantons: Appenzell Outer Rhodes and Inner Rhodes. They joined the Swiss Confederation in 1513 as Appenzell and were the 13th canton to join. The Outer Rhodes broke away from catholic Appenzell in 1597 when, in spite of the efforts of Three State Councillors from Berne, failed to mediate between the parties. They accepted the division of Appenzell in two half cantons mainly on religious lines – Outer Rhodes with twenty parishes being protestant and Appenzell parish with five other parishes remained committed to the old religion.
Thereafter, both Appenzell cantons remained stable and at peace with all its neighbours until Napoleon invaded her in 1798 – 1802.
The Flag of Appenzell is an argent bear standing on his hind legs against the power and might of the Abbot of St Gallen. The bear showing his claws and penis and outstretched tongue as a mark of defiance against the all-powerful abbot! In fact, although divided by religion and culture the Appenzeller are a people united through adversity from without. This is indicative of the Swiss psyche in general and personified through their cantonal flags.
The story goes that during the French Occupation of Switzerland Napoleons army destroyed all the cantonal flags of the Confederation with the exception of Appenzell Outer Rhode. The reason being that one quick-witted Appenzeller informed the officer concerned that VR on their their flag stood for Viva la République!
The Appenzeller cantons developed under the stable conditions after the French revolution and Switzerlands’ declared neutrality and international recognition thereof through the Treaty of Vienna in 1848.
Investment and population grew and the agricultural industry became the backbone of the Swiss rural economy. With the improved transport communications, a growing heavy industry based on the building of the railways, locomotives and rolling stock, around Winterthur and military arms around Zurich.
Swiss neutrality brought with it as well the Banking and Insurance industry, which is world famous to this day. Around Basle a huge Pharmaceutical industry with names such as Ciby-Geigy and Novartis grew etc. All these industries and sectors expanded with both World Wars and the largest industry remains agriculture sector and later tourism. The watch and precision industry although small contributes much towards being a good export earner for the Swiss.
Although largely rural, the Swiss have developed a highly sophisticated tourist industry which despite constant revaluation of the Swiss franc and competition from elsewhere in Europe, has nevertheless remained very competitive, offering variety and very good value for money.
However it is farming, its traditional way of life and of course tourism is what ‘Appenzellerland’ (both Appenzell cantons) is famous for, and no wonder! Their culture is rich, it’s very traditional and they won’t change their ways too readily!
Here are ten good reasons to come and explore the region:
- A very good transport infrastructure that is totally integrated. It offers regional excursions and a Day Rover ticket throughout the region and the countries bordering Lake Constance for around £18 /€24 per person.
- A rich selection of hotels and guest houses most with Wellness and other facilities at a reasonable price from £28/36 upwards per person.
- Beautiful villages and towns with rustic and painted houses and buildings everywhere.
- Walks in the mountains and valleys for walkers of all ages and fitness grades and restaurant facilities in the mountains even where it is hard to reach!
- Interesting museums, folkloric traditions and other centres of culture in Appenzell, Urnaesch and Trogen.
- Farmers’ fairs and other open-air traditions like Swiss Wrestling by the Säntis Mountain.
- To watch in early May and late August the processions of farm animals going up or coming down, the farmers’ and their chldren all in their finest brightly-coloured costumes to and from the lush Appenzell pastures.
- Various dance, musical and yodelling competition throughout the year
- The friendly but sometimes very reserved local inhabitants who once they have overcome their shyness, become your friends for life.
- Last but not least its peculiar and unusual expression of democracy through the annual “Landesversammlung,” which meets in the open-air in Appenzell every April, in order that the laws past by the Appenzell (innere) Parliament are they approved by the people.
Finally, If you do come to Switzerland for a vacation no matter how long or short your stay will be your camera or camcorder will be working overtime – there is almost too much to see and to do! Don’t forget ‘Appenzellerland,’ Switzerland in miniature!

Would a miniature bulldog and a mini french lop get along?
I have a 6 month old mini french lop (although he is much bigger than he should be for his age so i do not believe he is a mini) and i am researching a dog that will get along with him, as i would love for him to have a companion besides another rabbit.
I am not interested in a ‘lap dog’ I am looking for a cute medium sized dog that will be happy living in an apartment with a small backyard but still tough and cute.
Thanks
Miniature bulldogs are a breed they were introduced in the 80′s to help breed out health problems of full size bulldogs!
A mini bulldog, please read this

An English Bully is probably not the right choice or a companion
for a rabbit.
