Does anyone see a problem with a dog that lives to fetch a ball 24-7?
I have a Miniature Schnauser, female, 25 lbs. that literally wakes up in the morning looking for her ball, places it by your feet for you to throw it down the hallway or out in the yard. If we are watching TV she will place the ball on our sofa. The exercise is good for her but is this normal? . If I’m on the computer she will place it under my chair. She is lovable, friendly with all dogs and people. I’m not complaining but do you see any negatives in this behavior?
Dogs that are obsessive to “work” (as in fetch in your case) have placed all their internal desire for a job, into a job that they can do themselves, such as FETCH. It is GREAT to have a highly motivated working dog 
But allowing them to obsess over any object is unhealthy. Turn the ball into a reward and motivator for training. (obedience, rally, agility, fly ball!) Her ball obsession is her way of telling you that she wants a JOB and wants to WORK! Teach her a million tricks, get her involved in an AKC training club for obedience, rally, agility or fly ball.
I have a frisbee obsessed Border Collie, and this was a trait I was looking for in a dog, because it is a sign of a GREAT work ethic. She has excelled in obedience (finished her CD in 2 trials) and rally (finished her RN in one trial, her RA in two trials!) and agility (stuck in Open…we have weave issues…haha) plus herding. She is an awesome disc dog and because of her intense focus on the frisbee, this same intensity can be channeled into training. And she is just amazing!
Without a JOB for her to do, she failed 4 times in one year in “pet only” homes. Dogs this intense need to WORK.
I hope you get her involved in some type of training for competition. I bet she would be SUPER easy to train and she would LOVE to work. The bond between you two will deepen as well, because now you are a team.
*westie* That IS a normal trait for a Border Collie! If you simply googled “border collie” and read a simple breed trait overview, you would know that! BCs have been bred to exhibit the “lock eye” stare (what you describe) with the ability to block out everything. That is a true BC! Sounds like you should have researched the breed, and adopted a BC mix instead, or one with less of a drive.
