Jars Lids
Where can i source new uniform glass jars with lids for jams, chutneys and pickles .For free or very cheaply ?
I am trying to start a cottage industry producing homemade jams, pickles, chutneys etc using home grown fruit and veg to to a make some extra cash. Recession is hitting our family hard!Need to make extra regular cash.
I made some last year and gave away loads to friends. The feedback was extremely positive. (And i asked them to be brutal and very honest!) I would welcome any advice and how to go about selling/ venues/ etc. Thank you.
The only way to get them cheap, relatively cheap, is to buy in bulk, and bulk in glass jars means buying by the case at a minimum. They just aren’t cheap. Look on the net for “glass jars”. Forget finding them free. If you’re packing food in them for resale, they have to be new and I can’t imagine where you will find new glass jars all the same being given away, not more than a few at a time. Check what the rules are for selling such products where you live. Selling them rather than giving them away is a whole other ball game. There may be things you’re not allowed to sell if they are made in a home kitchen. You may need a business licence. You may need to take a “food safe” kind of course. You should have insurance–what if someone claims they got food poisoning from one of your products? Find local craft fairs and farmer’s markets to sell at, and of course you can go around to local stores and see if they’ll take a few of your things to see if they sell.
