Opinion about my dog…?
We just got a new puppy 3 days ago, he’s one, he’s a Miniature Dixon. He’s really skinny, like you can see his spine and some ribs. There were 4 other dogs and 2 cats in his other house and his owner claimed to have taken very good care of him. She said he was a show dog along with the others. But, he eats all his food we give him and all of my other puppy’s. And, he keeps drinking the water from our Christmas Tree base instead of his dish. When we say no and put his dish in front of him, he drinks from that. Do you think he does that because he had to do that in his other house because he was neglected?
It wasn’t clear but it looks like the dog is one year old. So it’s not a “PUPPY” puppy, it’s still a young dog, and young dogs sometimes go through “scrawny” stages. Also, the correct breed name is Miniature Dachshund
Now, just because the dog is skinny doesn’t mean it was neglected, there were 4 other dogs in the house… they might have eaten more than their share, or he may be a dog that has issues with keeping/gaining weight. If you haven’t taken him to the vet yet, I would suggest you do that very soon. Their could be any number of issues that are causing him to be skinny. One of the (usually) easiest ones to take care is worms. If the dog has worms, no matter how much food the dog eats it won’t gain weight.
If you’ve only had the dog for three days, there will be a period of adjustment for him. So give him time, make sure he knows where the water bowl is always kept. I suggest a crate or exercise pen to give him his own space and keep him from eating other dogs food, or them from eating his. I’m not telling you to lock the dog up all the time, but all dogs do better with their own space. At my home the dogs are fed in their crates, and if I have to run to town then they go to their crates/ xpens. The crate doors are left open when I’m home and they’re often found sleeping in there with the door wide open.
On the “Show dog” front. I’ve had many people tell me “oh this is a show dog, just like you see in Westminster” even when it’s a mixed breed. So just because someone says it’s a “Show Dog” doesn’t mean anything. (Now there are “show dogs” that ARE mixed breeds… they compete in Agility and Obedience, but they wouldn’t have told you just that they were a show dog, and they’d have given you the information you needed to get the dog transferred to your name.) It is possible the dog went in the show ring one time, and is technically a “show dog”, any dog that is registered can be entered in a conformation show… it doesn’t mean they’re a champion.
Have fun with your pup, I’d suggest after the vet checks him and lets you know he’s healthy that you get in a basic obedience class, I’d find someone who uses positive methods. Clicker training is really fun for most dogs, and helps build the bond between you and you’re new dog. Ask to sit in on a class to observe the trainers methods, if you are unsure about the method they use … ask them. If you don’t know where to find a trainer I’d start with www.apdt.com.

Edible Festive Wedding Favors
Christmas is a wonderful time of year for a wedding. As friends & family gather to celebrate the season there can be no better atmosphere than one of festive spirit! So if you are planning a Christmas wedding, here are some ideas for your wedding favors – of the edible variety!
