South France – rosé wines, Roman ruins and Hemingway
During the heyday of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC to 1 AD, its territories stretched across out of southern France, especially in the department of Gard. engineering marvels, which helped to extend Roman control over the southern border of France and the Mediterranean are now in ruins and scattered across the landscape in the department of Gard. It is surrounded by a natural environment, forests on both sides, the river that flows beneath the arches of limestone and the sun turning the aqueduct in a beautiful warm beige. Ancient olive trees hundreds of years old, are entrenched near the bottom of the arches perfectly designed that are centuries old bridge. Closer to the Mediterranean, the department of Gard in the sea in a series of coastal marshes of the Camargue call. Wines pink seem to flourish in the warm humid climate and sandy soil that is typical of the Camargue, a marshy area south of Nimes and Uzes salt, which runs parallel to the coast Mediterranean.
The main independent wine producer in this area is Listel. Established in 1883, was one of the few vineyards survived the phylloxera fungus that decimated France in the 1800s. It was the echo of the Camargue climate and periodic flooding of the salt marshes that prevents fungi are being established Listel on the vines. Today Listel produces 80% of pink wines of the Camargue in 5000 acres domain and is very proud that his vines are not American rootstock.
