Cardmaking is the art of hand decision-greeting cards. Many people with similar interests in crafts such as scrapbooking and stamping have begun to use their skills to start making handmade cards. This has contributed to cardmaking becoming a popular pastime.
The editors also have been quick to capitalize on the popularity in the manufacturing card, with several monthly magazines in the U.S. and the United Kingdom dedicated to the topic. We also have over 150 books on handmade cards published (source: Amazon.com).
Traditional high street stores have begun to devote an increasing amount of floor space to hand the cards. This is particularly the case as mass production greeting cards have been printed had to face competition from electronic greeting cards. In contrast, hundreds of small businesses have been created concerned by artisans eager to get a return on their efforts to cardmaking. Many others continue to sell their creations at craft fairs, markets and ETC. Others use their skills cardmaking turn a profit in the wedding planning market making handmade invitations for the wedding favors.
History
The custom of sending greeting cards goes back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year and to the ancient Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls.
By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards are being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year greetings woodcuts from 1400, and Valentine's handmade paper is being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400.
However, in the 1850s, the postcard had been transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular means of communication affordable staff, due in large part to advances in printing and mechanization.
This trend continued, followed by new trends like Christmas cards, the first which appeared in published form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card that he could send their friends and acquaintances. Techniques such as the development of color lithography in 1930 propelled the manufacturing of greeting card forward.
During the 1980s, the trend began to change, with consumers increasing looking for greeting cards that differed from the standard offer. End 1990 the market was clearly beginning to separate into three distinct segments:
handmade cards and bonus
mass-produced cards
e-cards
