What kind of dog breed do you recommend for my family and me?
Our Black Labrador / Mix died in April 2008, and now we're looking for take one for Christmas, hopefully! We are looking for an "average" family dog size that does not leave much, and is friendly. We do not want anything small, white or August! So far we have looked Terriers borders and we are sure that's what we're going to get, but any other ideas would be great! Also, if anyone have knowledge or experience to share in Border Terriers that would be a great help too, thanks!
Personally, I'm a big fan of Border Terriers and I think would make a great pet! You should know that usually are a bit more difficult with a mind of its own unlike laboratories are generally easy to train because of its people-oriented personality. Another dog that would take into account is the Welsh Terrier is my favorite terrier. There has been an owner of one of the two dogs, but I read a lot about them and I think that both fit your description and if they are well trained are great pets! Have fun:)
Positive reinforcement in dog training
Dogs are very sociable creatures – it's part of why we love dogs so much. The problem is that when a dog becomes too sociable can become aggressive and out of control. That is why it is important to train your dog from an early age to ensure that you can control their behavior and avoid this type of behavior problem.
The most worrying aspect of the aggression of any dog is biting as this can have consequences disastrous in the dog and his family. Current statistics show that over 70% of dog biting incidents happen within the family dog. Some of these lead to the dog in question is attributable to prevent this from happening in the future – especially when children are involved. This is the most tragic possible outcome that could have been avoided with effective training in the first place.
Proper training of the dog from an early age, these habits help prevent developing in the dog. The training also allows your dog to stay more in control of their feelings towards other human beings and animals. This will give them a better life social "and enable them to integrate faster with his family and his new environment.
In reality dog training is another story. It is not always so easy as some are doing to yourself. Certain things must be in place to make the training a success. One of the most critical aspects of any dog training is something called "positive reinforcement." This is simply the system where the dog is rewarded with treats or praise (or sometimes both) when the dog obeys orders or exhibits a positive behavior in your environment. Positive reinforcement dog shows that will be praised and / or treatment when they are submitting new orders or whose conduct is true that the owner requires. It is a matter of good dog associate certain feelings (treats or praise) to obey an order from the owner. This kind of partnership can become rapidly in nature to the dog.
What if your dog does not obey these orders immediately displays new or negative behavior? Do you punish the dog? Of course not! This sends mixed signals the dog is, that the same verbal command or request could easily be punished as a reward. If your dog starts you questions regarding the praise or punishment, then training can be very difficult if not impossible.
Another big mistake to avoid is dog training into a bad habit – rather than in the opposite direction. For example, when dogs bark, it is usually because they have seen or heard anything strange or unknown. When the dogs keep barking, barking, even if it includes a close, it becomes a problem. How do most people deal with barking dog? They shout the dog to shut up. Unfortunately, the dog might have to join this action as the owner on the experience of "barking" and then just follow the dog to bark every time he cried at what is making matters worse for everyone involved.
Any dog training out without some kind of positive reinforcement is a waste of time dogs and owners. The sooner you adopt this technique in your training program for your new puppy or older dog the sooner you will see positive results.
