Falling Copper Price Forces Another Mine Closure
Falling copper price forces another mine closure
ANVIL Mining has announced its decision to place its Dikulushi copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on care and maintenance until the copper price recovers.
The company said the Dikulushi cash cost per pound is currently higher than the copper price.
Copper plunged 7% on Sunday night on the London Metal Exchange to just $US3024 per tonne, before jumping almost 9% last night to $US3290/t.
In April, copper was trading at a high of $US8809/t.
Dual-listed Anvil said placing Dikulushi on care and maintenance will amount to savings of around $US2 million ($A3 million) per month.
“Although copper grades from underground sources would be higher from January next year, and cost reduction measures, including curtailment of certain capital expenditures have been put in place recently, a copper price of approximately $US1.40 per pound renders the Dikulushi mine uneconomic at present,” Anvil president and chief executive officer Bill Turner said.
Anvil posted a $US17.3 million loss for the September quarter, including provisional pricing adjustments of $US9.4 million, due to the falling copper price.
In September, the company cancelled a $C237 million ($A285.9 million) private placement with Catala Global, citing the deterioration in market conditions.
The Perth-based company had previously reported operational issues at Dikulushi and modifications to underground development to change the mining method to an Avoca cut-and-fill method were underway, resulting in lower-grade production in the September quarter.
Dikulushi was on track to produce 11,000 tonnes of copper in 2008, and was due to ramp-up to 17,000t per annum in the first quarter of 2009.
Anvil said operations at Dikulushi can restart once the copper price improves and required staff can be mobilised.
The Dikulushi mine has a measured and indicated resource of 1.1 million tonnes at 7% copper and 179 grams per tonne silver, and an inferred resource of 0.3Mt at 4.3% copper and 112gpt silver.
Dikulushi, in the Katanga Province, has been in production since December 2001.
The company announced last month that development of the Kinsevere stage II solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) expansion would be put on hold, but today said it would focus on securing additional funding to complete the expansion.
Anvil is unhedged and at November 12 had cash of $US90 million and long-term investments worth $US38 million.
Around 95% trading activity in the company’s securities takes place on the Toronto Stock Exchange and overnight jumped 11% to $C1.
Anvil shares plunged 24% or 36c yesterday, but were untraded on the Australian Securities Exchange this morning and remain at $1.14
