Rochester Review "Some Old Landmarks worth seeing
A good day of March, I decided to take a break from writing the article and pay visit to my old hometown of Rochester, NY. It has been 30 years since the last time you visited the site in 1980. With airline ticket and hotel bills and much more costs pull me to stay home, the next best thing was to visit the website and see what he could unearth. It was a fantastic trip and I have planned to "visit" there many more times in the future.
Let's look at some of the great places to spend a few hours or more.
Ontario Beach Park
When I was a kid I remembered the place as "Charlotte" or sometimes "by the lake." A photo that can not find (dated 1936 or thereabouts) I was in a bathing suit child running through water puddles on the beach. The place has not changed much in the seventies followed, except that it has improved.
If taking a romantic stroll along the picturesque pier, riding the 1905 Dentzel carousel menagerie, or boating, Ontario Beach Park offers everything for a perfect day summer at the beach. Ontario Beach Park attracts tens of thousands of visitors a year. The park has seven shelters that are available to rent in the summer months.
The seven open air shelters come with picnic tables, grills, electricity, water and near the bathrooms. The Roger Robach Community Center (Bathhouse) has been renovated and is available to rent for picnics, parties and weddings. These facilities have existed for as long as I can remember.
In the early days, used have a tram line linking downtown Rochester from the beach. After the 40 buses that ran along Lake Avenue provided the transport. The line bus (Lake Avenue # 1) continues to operate today. You can access my blog for more information.
There used to be a skating rink wheels located at the center of the park area, but the latest map of the place shows that she was missing. You had to be a certain age and height to the park let in monitors, besides being too small, I also did not have skates. It was fun just to see them skate around. Most of the crowd of skating were teenagers or older. Sometimes I think to myself how many of these people are now its last miles in nursing homes and other facilities for nursing care.
In addition to the beach and picnic area, the biggest attraction was not the "Merry-Go-Round." If I was ever a blight on my son and days Later, he was always to ride the carousel. This was the 1905 Dentzel carousel zoo called "The Duchess." Located on the eastern edge of Ontario Beach Park. The Duchess has the distinction of being one of the carousels of only fourteen years of antique zoo in the United States. It is also one of the few remaining remain in their original location. This creation Gustav Dentzel carousel is a three rows consisting of fifty-two animals and two chariots. The animals were horses, rabbits, cats, ostriches, pigs and mules, among others.
In 1980, the Preservation Board granted historic status carousel. In 1984 the Parks Department began extensive restoration of the carousel, which lasted for many years and included improvements to the building and surrounding walkways. Until recently, Wurlitzer Military Band organ style 165 paper rolls were used, but a Stinson MIDI system replaces the body and continues to play the same music once heard in the original census. The Duchess is a unique joy Rochesterians and visitors. It celebrated its 100 years in Ontario Beach in 2005.
From the Duchess carousel could contemplate the Genesee River and sometimes you may see one of the lake steamers coming into the Port of Rochester. Overlooking the Genesee River is a stone lighthouse. This forty-foot lighthouse high was built in 1822 to guide the growing number of merchant vessels in the Port of Rochester. After a long and storied history of history, the lighthouse was rumored to be demolished in 1965. Concerned students intervened on their behalf. Subsequent renewals led to the tower was relit in 1984. There is a fascinating and well-stocked museum gift shop in his hand.
Strong Museum
If you think of museums as stuffy nose, musty places, think again! The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York is considered one of the nation's 10 children's museums by Child magazine. Exceeds any notion of this kind may have about permanent museum. The Strong Museum, children of all ages are invited to play, explore, discover, and participate in capricious environments, interactive learning. The museum offers a spare change of clothes for children in case of "accidents."
After experiencing the exhibits, you can take a break with the kids and make a quick meal at an authentic diner museum in 1956. You can try an Ice Cream ice cream at Sweet Shoppe Louie, a source of ice cream to the old. And no visit is complete without a ride in the 1918 Allan Herschell carousel!
You can take a fascinating Travel through impressive collections and compelling exhibitions. The Fort Museum can immerse yourself in entertainment trends in popular American culture and increased of illuminating contemporary American Life. Take your child in creative environments that make learning about the past and present of the lively and fun, whether a child or a kid at heart. In A History Place, a learning center for ages 3-7, children can play in an attic of the century, kitchen, lounge, and the train station.
If you ever wanted to find a place in Rochester, where time careers and their children are going to pull the sleeves "you back there again, "the Strong Museum is the place. I love a return trip there, and you too.
George is everywhere
In Rochester, you can not go very far without finding the name of George Eastman. If you ever heard the expression "Let George Do It", Rochester is the place where George did, many times.
The George Eastman House is the world's oldest photography museum. It is also one of the archives of the oldest film world, The Eastman House opened its doors in 1949 in Rochester, New York, USA. The world-famous for his photographs and film archives, the museum Eastman House is also a leader in film preservation and conservation of photography, educating archivists and conservators from around the world. The museum is home to the Dryden Theatre, a repertory theater 535-seat. The museum is located in the vicinity of the house built by George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company.
The George Eastman House Museum of Photography was established in 1947. From the beginning, the museum's mission has been to collect, preserve and present history photography and film. Opened in 1949, showing its core collections in former public house Eastman. the entire file, collections corporate, and portfolios of artists for life have been donated to the Eastman House and a rare set of moving images and ephemera.
In 1984, with collections growing at a rapid pace, the museum increasingly suffered from its own success. With an increasing number of materials to store, protect, and study additional space became critical. A new service opened in January 1989. It currently houses over 400,000 photographs and negatives, 23,000 films and several million film stills, publications 43,000, and over 25,000 pieces of technology.
In 1996, the museum opened the Louis B. Mayer Center Conservation in nearby Chile, New York. One of the four centers of film preservation in the United States (from March 2006), the facility houses Museum rare 35mm prints made from cellulose nitrate. In 1997, the Eastman House launched the first school of film preservation in the United States to teach restoration, preservation and archiving of moving images. The Jeffrey L. Selznick School of Film Preservation supported by a grant from the Foundation Louis B. Mayer.
In 1999, Eastman House launched the Mellon Advanced Residency Program in Photography Conservation has been made possible by grant aid Andrew W. Foundation Mellon. The program trains archivists and curators of the picture above from around the world.
George Eastman (1854-1932) built home at 900 East Avenue between 1902 and 1905. He created a unique urban estate complete with 10.5 acres of the operation of farms, gardens, greenhouses, stables, barns, pastures and 35,000 square meters, 50-room Colonial Revival mansion with a fireproof structure of reinforced concrete.
Eastman House has a classical facade of decorative craftsmanship. Beneath this exterior were such modern conveniences as an electric generator, a telephone system internally, with 21 stations, a built-in vacuum, a network of core clock, a lift, and a large pipe organs. This made the house itself an instrument, a center of rich musical life of the city from 1905 to Eastman's death in 1932.
George Eastman did not like to see the children go around without great facilities medical and dental. Donated a large cash donation to the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital maintained and the Rochester Dental Dispensary.
George Eastman also loved music. He did not care whether it was jazz or classical. While a child can hit a piano or a violin sound like a cat died, he or she picked up in the music education program in the Rochester school system, courtesy of George Eastman.
On the other end of the musical pipe emerged world-renowned musicians and other artists such as Mitch Miller, Chuck Mangione, Jacques Lipson, and other eminent talent. Eastman School of Music educated talented musicians around the world who become leaders and innovators in all fields of music. More than 900 students are enrolled in the collegiate division of the Eastman School. They come from nearly every state, and about 20% are from other countries.
Each year about 260 new students enroll, selected from more than 1,400 applications. They are guided by a teacher of reputation, which includes more than 90 full-time resident members. Seven Pulitzer Prize winners have taught or studied at Eastman, as well as several Grammy Awards and other prizes. Eastman past and present students have won many performance competitions high profile, including Competition BBC Young Musicians, Young Soloists Competition of the national statistical office, and the Association of Russian-American Music Competition for Young Virtuosos. The vast majority of the 9,000 alumni of the school that their musical careers. Among them are opera singers Renee Fleming, Anthony Dean Griffey, and the late William Warfield, jazz musician Ron Carter, Chuck Mangione, Steve Gadd, conductor, oboist, and producer Mitch Miller, Dominick Argento and composers, Charles Strouse, and Michael Torke. Eastman graduates perform in all major U.S. orchestras and are respected members of orchestras around the world.
I was lucky to have grown in Rochester. I would love to go back to revisit my old stomping grounds. At the age of 74 years, could still find some friends there.
