The City of Roses
The city of Portland, Oregon began as a spot known as The Clearing, which was on the banks of the Willamette River about halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver
Portland has the personality of a small community and the activities and vitality of a large city. It was once known as America’s best kept secret, and is now one of the country’s hottest travel destinations.
This climate is ideal for growing roses, and for more than a century Portland has been known as The City of Roses, and has many rose gardens and most prominently the International Rose Test Garden.The city of Portland has a lot of these things breweries, pubs, bookstores, coffee houses, churches and strip clubs.
The night life is filled with many night clubs and bars. What ever you are in the mood for, whether it be a Dance Club, Lounge Bar, Irish Pub or even an Outdoor Patio Bar it can be found here.
It is well-known for its microbrewery beer with 28 breweries within the city, Portland is home to more breweries than any other city in the country, and possibly the world.
The region’s renowned for seafood, berries, pears, cherries, hazelnuts, wild game and vegetables of all kinds.
The Pearl District is a well- known Art district and offers many shops, galleries and restaurants from which to choose. Shopping in here is always tax-free. Shopping in the Pearl is a delight in so many ways. Where old factories and warehouses once stood, are the old buildings with new and exciting shops full of wonderful, quirky objects and clothing.
The Portland Classical Chinese Gardens location was donated by Northwest Natural. The land was originally used as a parking lot and in 1999 the dream of making a Suzhou-style garden began. In September 2000, it was completed. All of the plants in the Gardens are indigenous to China but were grown in the USA. There are five Elements in a Chinese Garden, Stone, Water, Plants, Architecture and Literature. The Gardens take up one city block in Chinatown, making this the largest Classical Chinese Garden outside of China.
In keeping with over 4,000 years of Chinese tradition, the Portland Classical Chinese Garden welcomes the New Year with an exuberant and colourful celebration. For two weeks, the Garden showcases a number of activities for the whole family which include paper cutting crafts, lion dances, and knot tying.
