Replacement China: the Best Places to Scour, Dig, and Explore in Your Search
Whether a plate from your wedding china set or your favorite bone china piece, few things are as disheartening as breaking or damaging a beloved piece. But take heart! Finding a replacement or discontinued china piece doesn’t have to be a long and difficult process if you know where to search.
Gather Information
If you are lucky enough to still have the original packaging, search for the manufacturer’s information, or at the very least, a pattern name or number. The more information you have about your piece or set, the more likely you are to find success.
Haunt the Right Shops
Regularly visit local flea markets and antique shops – their inventory is constantly changing and it would be the most likely place for an old china piece to show up, especially if you have a more common pattern. Another great place? Estate sales, particularly if it was a large, older estate.
Connect with Collectors
You may be surprised to find out how many people collect old china. Log online and search for your pattern name, number, or simply “china collectors.” Once you’ve found collectors (and rest assured, they’re out there), chances are they are willing to part with the piece you need for the right price.
China Replacement Services
This is by far the most convenient and quickest way to replace your discontinued china piece. China replacement companies have thousands of pieces in stock from hundreds of different patterns and many have their inventory right online so you can search for what you need. Even better is many can identify a pattern by simply looking at picture, which is ideal if you have no information regarding the pattern. Send a clear picture (noting colors, if needed) of the pattern you are looking for and the will likely be able to give you a pattern name and number.

The value of an antique/vintage China set? Are there books that list the sets and value?
I have a Mikasa set but can only find sites that sell replacement pieces. I can’t find information on full sets. Which is more valuable- selling them piece by piece or as a Complete Set?
Books aren’t your best source, collectible prices change too fast. Check eBay – search by maker & brand, you should be able to refine the search to your exact pattern. You’ll have to revisit every few days till somebody lists what you have. You might be able to search by “completed listings” too.
Per piece vs. set depends on what the “Full Set” consists of. For most people today, Coffee Cups & saucers are a liability when acquiring china. You’ll get most $ for plates, small bowls, and small plates. You’ll almost have to pay people to take cups & saucers or large low soup bowls (sell them for cereal bowls instead!).
