Has anyone here made a chaise lounge from a twin mattress?
How did you do it without it looking like just a twin mattress? Did you put it on a regular metal bed frame or a wooden platform? What kind of fabric did you cover it with? If you haven’t done this, but have seen one, could you tell me about it? I am planning on doing this in a bedroom. Thanks. If you are just looking for quick points, please don’t answer. Serious answers only please.
I made one for the sun porch from a wooden frame painted to matche the porch swing and rockers. Since the bottom of the frame itself is only about 12 inches off the floor, it took away some of the “bed” look. To hold bolster pillows in place and further add the look of a chaise, there are rails made from 1 x 8 inch planks along the “head” and about 2/3 of the way across the back side. I stacked two bunk mattresses and used a curved upholstery needle and monofilament to whip stitch the two together. I then covered the entire “bed” area and brought it up under the bottom edge of the frame where it was attached with staples (you could also attach with velcro strips to make laundering much easier). I then made round fat upholstered bolsters to fit along the rails and filled with assorted toss pillows. Since the upholstery matches the cushions for the swing and rockers, it looks more like a chaise than a bed. Also, the fact that I have it sitting at an angle in the corner rather than along a wall helps also.
For a bedroom, you could use as luxurious a fabric as you like and maybe trim along the bottom with the upholstery gimp for a decorative element. To further enhance your look, why not staple batting on all the wooden areas and wrap all in fabric? There’s actually quite a lot you can do to get many different looks. I’d be curious to see what it would look like in one of the microsuedes or even a faux leather finished in brass upholtery tacks with a chenille throw and some tapestry covered pillows. Good luck!

Shopping Tips For A Chaise Lounge

Look for foam materials that are a high density foam for the core of the cushion. Using a high density foam means you will have much better support for the cushion without sacrificing comfort. This thickness of the cushion is really up to you, as you can find them in a range on one to two inches, and in some cases you will find three inch thick cushions. Finally, a quality of a good chaise lounge cushion is one that will not move around on you as you sit in it. There is nothing worse than relaxing in a nice chair and have the cushion slowly creep away from you slip off of the frame. You also want to make sure the cushion have good coverage on the frame and is not either hanging off the sides or show the frame too much. What you want to look for is cushions that have straps that will tie it down to the frame of the chair.
