Dog Phobia – Schnauzer Afraid of Burner/Stove?
My dog, a miniature schnauzer that’s 1 year old, has a terrible phobia of stoves/ovens/burners. Whenever she hears pots or pans coming out of the cabinets for cooking, she knows what that means- the oven’s coming on! So she runs to the opposite end of the house, curls up in a corner, and shivers.
Does anyone elses’ dog have this trouble? What can I do about it?
BTW: This is NOT because of the clanging of pots and pans. The reason she cowers at the sound of the pans is because she’s been conditioned. She associates that noise with the stove/burner, and she flees.
Ask your vet next time you go. The best way to get your dog’s mind off of this, is to just ignore him when he does this. When dogs are afraid and we give them attention, they think we are afraid too and that we’re looking to them for protection/support/confirmation that the thing is scary/etc. This makes them more afraid because you, their pack leader, is afraid… or so they think. If you just ignore the dog when it does this, it will eventually stop doing it.
