When should I put my childrne in bunk beds?
My eldest is just 5…the youngest is 19/20 months old…the eldest really wants to share a room and bunk beds with her sister and to be honest it would be good…because I need the other room for an office! But when will the youngest be ok for the bottom bunk in your opinion? She does not yet climb out of her cot and I would worry that she might fall off or climb up the ladder at the moment…what age do you think?
I think you should go for it – the older one is big enough for the top bunk and she wants to share and the younger one will be fine on the bottom bunk with a bed rail.
To prevent the risk of the toddler climbing up and falling off the top bunk use a ‘half ladder’. This is fixed to the top bunk but does not come all the way down to the floor. It is secured back to the side of the bed post.
This means the older child can reach up and lift her leg to climb up but the ladder is too height for the toddler to do the same.
If you can’t find one of these just remove the bottom few rungs or put on one of those ladder guards or just remove it altogether if your older daugher is agile enough to climb up without one.
Alternatively, get bunks with steps rather than a ladder as this will mean the younger chaild can climb up safely. You.d need a decent rail on the bed too though.
