What happens to a hard-boiled egg if you keep it long enough?
This follows on from an earlier question of mine. Egg collectors used to “blow” the egg by piercing a hole in either end and then blowing out egg contents. Result is an empty egg shell, which is fragile. Also, process often resulted in broken egg. But what if you just hard-boiled the egg?
Presumably, the boiling would kill any microbes, and the shell would prevent any new ones from coming in. Would the egg go off and become smelly or would it just stay the way it is. After all, complete dinosaur eggs have been found, with fossilized embroys within.
i started laughing when i saw your question because i know first hand how they smell after a few months. when i was a young child all my cousins and i had an Easter egg hunt at grandma’s house. a few months later we all were at grandma’s again and one of the younger cousins found an egg. now all of us little ones were very excited at our good fortune but the older cousins took it away from us just because they could and they wanted it for themselves. now before we could run crying to grandma they cracked the shell. I’ll never forget that smell or the looks on their faces.
so to answer your question. as long as the shell is completely intact you will have no problem but think “skunk” if it ever is cracked. thanks for the memory:) by the way this was outside in the middle of summer in Aarkansas.
