Mission Furniture Blanket Chests
Blanket chests created in the style of furniture in the Mission as we know it today, derived design elements furniture made from 1900 to 1916 in Grand Rapids, New York by Gustav Stickley. The first piece of "Mission furniture" was introduced in the semi-annual furniture exhibition in Grand Rapids. This was a stupid stick, chair part that the manufacturer said he had found in one of the Franciscan Missions of California. As a novelty, this chair caught his eye. The public liked the romance that inspired this piece and was ready to buy parts available even though they did wrong. Americans, as always, want a product that was different and new.
This gave him another intelligent manufacturer Furniture the idea of doing a small line of chairs in this style including the addition of the Maltese Cross in its design element as a prominent feature. This addition is supposed to help people think that their chairs were being produced in the Missions. He called the mission "this new line of McHugh 'furniture. Although McHugh was the creator of the name of "mission" of oak furniture, furniture were poorly designed and poorly constructed. Once the public discover how the construction was poor, their parts did not sell for long.
The Mission style furniture lost his foot hold in 1916 as an element of choice and many of the manufacturers of this style breaks, including Stickley. Yet in following years, the furniture Mission designed and created primarily by Gustav Stickely are the pieces that have survived to be highly sought after heritage furniture.
