sustainable materials?
what kind of materials are sustainable for things in a house?
i mean like for furniture, bedding, curtains, insulation, etc.?
i am building a mini house for school and we have to say what each thing would be made out of if it really were in a sustainable house
like for example, if i have a mini bed that is a wood bed from a dollhouse, i would probs say it would be bamboo on the project.
OH ALSO: how are the materials that you give me sustainable/”greener” than what the things would normally be made out of?
Flooring: Cork (harvested from tree)
Insulation: Hay OR Straw (you grow it in a field)
Actually, there are plans for houses that use straw or hay as the basic element instead of wood.
Some really old houses used horse-hair insulation.
Brick, adobe, or just dirt can also be used. It’s possible to make a house underground for $500 (sort of like a hobbit hole.)
Wood is fairly sustainable as a building material, but it has to be sustainable logging (ie coppicing, NOT slash&burn NOR clearcutting). At least it rots unlike plastic. I’ve posted a link to a house that’s all bamboo.
Windows: Glass; there’s lots of silica out there on our beaches.
